Namaste from the green, serene mountains of Asturias, Northern Spain’s best kept secret and home to our perfect mountain retreat. This week-long retreat with Eileen Muir will combine yoga, meditation, pranayama, and hiking. No matter what your level of yoga experience, you are welcome on this refreshing and rejuvenating retreat. Our home for the week will be surrounded by dramatic peaks, lush green hills, deep gorges, and crystal clear rivers. We will walk through scenic gorges, alongside babbling brooks, and along some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Juan Carlos and Judy operate the delightful Hotel Fuentes de Lucia, situated in a spectacular and untouched corner of northwest Spain. The recently converted farmhouse rests on the hillside of a green valley in the hamlet of Faedo and is part of the Parque Natural Urbinas-La Mesa in the heart of Asturias. This lovely little hotel (turned retreat center) will be entirely ours for the week of the retreat.

What does each day look like?

Start the morning meditating, followed by an energizing yoga session. We will then have a hearty breakfast in the main dining room, formerly a mill, before the day’s hiking adventure unfolds. Next, we will hike through magnificent landscapes via well-trodden pathways visiting remote villages where life continues unchanged,much as it has always been. We will walk on beautiful mountain trails, visit historical sights, experience traditional and wonderful food, and hike glorious costal paths. In the late afternoon, we will enjoy an inversion and pranayama practice to rejuvenate our walking legs before relishing home-cooked, rustic, simple, vibrant, and wholesome vegetarian meals prepared by the owners of Fuentes de Lucia.

What is the terrain like?road

The paths are well-worn and are not difficult. There will be some long, slow climbs through farming areas. We walk along secondary farming roads, through forests of chestnuts and hazelnuts, and apple orchards, as well as some of the most beautiful coastal walks and beaches that you have ever seen.

Yoga Facilitiesyoga-room

There is nowhere better to breathe in the pure mountain air and stretch your limbs than at this tranquil restored farmhouse, Fuentes de Lucia, and purpose-built yoga studio. There are indoor and outdoor spaces for practicing yoga. The indoor yoga room is constructed with wooden flooring and is bright and welcoming.

Yoga

Eileen will guide you through meditation, asana, and pranayama. Eileen’s yoga sessions are taught in the Iyengar tradition, focusing on alignment, mindfulness, and the breath. Attention is always given to form and therapeutic principals. A variety of yoga asanas will be taught including standing poses, backbends, forward bends, restoratives, inversions, pranayama, and meditation. We will methodically work through pranayama techniques designed to purify the body and prepare the mind for meditation.

  • Modifications are offered to help individuals understand and work with their own unique limitations.
  • Classes are planned to strengthen, calm, energize, and balance your being
  • Classes are suited for all levels of practice

Accommodation

The retreat center is situated in a spectacular and untouched corner of northwest Spain. The recently converted farmhouse rests on the hillside of a green valley in the hamlet of Faedo; a paradise for those who love the great outdoors. The Inn can accommodate 16 people in 8 rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, and either a balcony or terrace.

Our Hosts and Our Meals

photo-foodOur hosts, husband and wife team Juan Carlos Fuentes and Judy Colaneri both have a passion for cooking. Juan Carlos’s garden is abundant with organic vegetables and fruit trees which he has loved and nurtured and will then serve on your plate. When he’s not tending the vegetable patch, you’ll find him in the kitchen experimenting with local ingredients, creating classic Spanish cuisine, with his own twists, for you to savor alongside a good glass o wine.

Judy Colaneri is a culinary trained chef from the mountain town of Aspen, Colorado where she prepares feasts and healthy meals for the Hollywood jet-set crowd during her ‘down’ season. Judy’s continuing love for language, the culinary arts, and generous warmth of her personality will make you feel welcome and cared for on our retreat!

Per person pricing:

Total Retreat Cost:  $1,500.00

  • **There is a $75 fee if total payment is not made by March 1st **
  • **All Payments must by paid by April 1st, 2018**
  • There is a $300 non-refundable deposit to secure your spot in the retreat (Limited to 20 people)
  • $300 deposit to be paid as soon as possible to secure your place
  • $1,200 balance is due February 1st, 2018
  • Optional Two payments for balance available:
    • $600 due December 1st, 2017
    • $600 due March 1st, 2018
      • **$75 late fee applies if paid after March 1st, 2018 and total payment must be paid by April 1st, 2018

    • **We recommend that you arrive the day before and stay the night in Oviedo, to ensure that you arrive at our meeting place without any difficulty (i.e. arrive at Oviedo on 23 rd of June, so we can meet on the 24th of June)**
    • Drop off on June 30th, 2018 in the morning at Oviedo Airport
  • Six nights of shared accommodations with en suite bathrooms
  • Twice daily yoga classes, meditation, and pranayama
  • Guided walks (optional) in the surrounding mountains, river valleys, and coastal areas.
  • Hearty and healthy breakfasts
  • Delicious dinners with wine
  • Some leisure time each day and one afternoon off
  • **This retreat does not include lunch and airfare**

Travel

We recommend that you arrive the day before and stay the night in Oviedo, to ensure that you arrive at our meeting place without any difficulty (i.e. arrive at Oviedo on 16th of June, so we can meet on the 17th of June at Oviedo Bus Station).

Transportation from OVD airport to Oviedo center:

Airport of Asturias (IATA: OVD) is approximately 40km away from Oviedo. The airport is located on the outskirts of the town of Avilés.

  • The bus is by far the cheapest way to get to Oviedo from the airport (€8). An ALSA coach will leave you in the Bus station, very close to the centre, with connections to local buses, taxis and the train station next to it. Buses are on the right as you exit the terminal and leave every hour from 6.00am to midnight. The journey takes from 40 to 50 minutes.
  • A taxi will cost around € 46 and take 20 to 25 minutes.

We will be meeting at Estación de Autobuses (Bus Station) in Oviedo at 5 pm on June 24th, 2018.

Hiking boots – One of the most important items will be a good pair of hiking boots that come up to your ankles. Be sure you have hiked in them prior to this trip so they are broken in and comfortable.

Large enough to hold the following items plus extra room for snacks.

1 rain jacket or poncho – A lightweight poncho or waterproof windbreaker with waterproof pants is what we suggest. We don’t anticipate a lot of precipitation but it’s best to be prepared.

1 sun hat – We think it best that you bring along a baseball cap or a safari type cotton hat that will protect the back of the neck as well as the face.

Eileen Muir, Director at Karuna

Eileen Muir began her yoga training in 1969 at the age of 13, and her studies led her to India, China and Japan. She has been devoted to studying and teaching yoga, having studied Iyengar yoga with the most senior Iyengar teachers, including Mary Dunn, Manouso Manos, Patricia Walden, since 1983. In addition to being a Yoga Alliance certified teacher, Eileen is also an AOBTA-certified instructor of Five Element Shiatsu and teaches a 200-hour yoga teacher training, a 500-hour advanced yoga teacher training, and a 500-hour 5 element Shiatsu certification program. Eileen is a certified yoga therapist by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). Karuna is a Board Certified Approved Provider for Continuing Education Credits by NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutics, Massage, and Bodywork)

Eileen has been practicing Vipassana Meditation for over 25 years. Since 2004, she has been studying and meditating with Adyashanti. Her teachers are Nisargadatta Maharaj and Adyashanti. Nisargardatta was teaching in Bombay, India in the form of Advaita Vedanta.  She believes Adyashanti is the living embodiment of the teachings of Nisargadatta.

Eileen’s teaching is infused with the passion and understanding that comes from her commitment to yoga as a spiritual path to relieve suffering. Each class is an exploration into stillness, moving from gross to subtle while gently penetrating the layers of our Being. She brings compassion and vitality to her classes along with close attention to every student. A native of Scotland, Eileen also brings a lively Celtic spirit and humor to her teaching.
