Moving Yoga into the World With Matthew Sanford
As yoga practitioners, we know that the insights gained through our yoga practice are relevant far beyond our own yoga mats. Matthew will share his personal story of trauma, loss, paralysis, and the healing power of yoga. He will highlight the work of his non-profit Mind Body Solutions in transforming trauma, loss, and disability by awakening the connection between mind and body, both for individuals and for institutional healthcare providers like. Heightened attention to alignment and precision integrate the subtle energetic connections between mind, body, and spirit— this is a revolutionary breakthrough revealed by Iyengar yoga. It also makes the practice of yoga possible for Matthew Sanford. Paralyzed from the chest down, Matthew has spent 19 years exploring these subtle connections; connections that are not impeded by his paralysis but, in fact, enhanced by it. In this weekend workshop, students will work strenuously but also be challenged to explore beyond the physical performance of asanas and delve into their underlying energetic nature. In so doing, they will gain glimpses into the heart of yoga. The weekend will include an introduction to Matthew’s compelling story, three asana classes, and many opportunities for discussion. Teachers, students, and professionals of special care are invited to attend along with their students.
Matthew is a nationally recognized yoga teacher, an accomplished public speaker, and a parapalegic for the last thirty-one years. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Waking: A memoir of Trauma and Transcendence (Rodale: 2006). Matthew uses his unique experience to be a leading voice for the integration of a mind/body/spirit approach into our medical and rehabilitation practices. He is also a pioneer in adapting yoga for people living with disabilities and won the Karma Yoga Award from the Yoga Journal for this work in 2003. He is the founder of Mind Body Solutions, a 501 ©(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to the practical notion that minds and bodies work better together.
